Polymorph control in nonphotochemical light-induced nucleation and optical Kerr study.
To further understanding of nonphotochemical laser-induced nucleation (NPLIN), specifically the mechanism of polarization switching and the relationship between polymorph structure and laser polarization, this dissertation extends our previous experiments to investigate the effects of temperature, concentration, polarization, wavelength, and intensity on polarization switching in aqueous glycine solutions, which can crystallized into several polymorphs. Similar studies were carried out on and L-histidine, a chiral amino acid with several polymorphs. For a single-polymorph system, the intensity dependence of NPLIN in aqueous urea was also studied.;A narrow supersaturation window for "polarization switching" was observed in the glycine system at wavelengths of 1064 and 532 nm, with the supersaturation window becoming narrower at lower laser intensities. Within this window, a small range of ellipticities near unity could induce the nucleation of the alpha-polymorph, and this range depended on supersaturation. Order-parameter ellipsoids and triangles based on the optical Kerr alignment are presented to aid in the interpretation of the experimental results. "Polarization switching" has also been observed in aqueous L-histidine in the supersaturation range 1.40-1.60. For the urea system at both 532 and 1064 nm, the threshold for NPLIN is lower, and the efficiency of NPLIN at a given intensity is higher for linear polarization than for circular polarization.;All of the above cases involved two-component solutions. For a supercooled 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl, a single-component thermotropic liquid crystal system, the laser induced nucleation from the metastable supercooled isotropic phase to the nematic phase was studied during slow cooling (0.001°C/min) and high light intensity (0.39 MW/cm2). The nematic phase director tended to align along the direction of the plane of polarization of the light. At the intensities used, there is no observable laser-induced

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a well established biomedical imaging technique, which produces ultrahigh spatial resolution cross-sectional images of biological tissue in the range of a few millimeters. The axial resolution of OCT improves with a larger bandwidth optical source. Traditional OCT often uses a femtosecond laser as the broadband optical source. Recently, supercontinuum spectrum has been demonstrated by using the combination of femtosecond lasers and nonlinear effects of photonic crystal fiber. However, this source has fairly high cost.;This thesis investigates OCT using a more cost effective source based on a microchip laser-pumped photonic crystal fiber. The Q-switched Nd:YAG microchip laser produces 0.6 ns duration pulses at 1064 nm with 8 microJ of energy at a 6.6 kHz repetition rate. These pulses are sent through a photonic crystal fiber with a zero dispersion wavelength of 1040 nm. The generated supercontinuum pulses are coupled into a fiber-based spectral domain OCT system operating at a central wavelength of 800 nm. The axial scan rate is 6.6 kHz, where each scan is produced by a single supercontinuum pulse. Point spread function measurements show excellent resolution, but sensitivity is degraded by spectral fluctuations of individual supercontinuum pulses. Test images show less dynamic range compared to a Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser based system. However, this supercontinuum source has potential for stroboscopic illumination in time-resolved low coherence interferometry.

Dense spectral beam combining with volume Bragg gratings in photo-thermo-refractive glass.
Beam combining techniques have become an important tool in the design of high-power high-brightness laser systems. Spectral beam combining (SBC) is an incoherent combining technique that does not require phase control of sources, allowing for a stable and robust system. Using SBC, beams from an array of lasers with each element operated at a different wavelength are combined into a single near-diffraction-limited beam with the same aperture using dispersive optical elements. SBC by means of volume Bragg gratings (VBGs) utilizes unique spectral response of VBGs: diffraction efficiency is close to unity when the Bragg condition is satisfied and is close to zero at multiple points corresponding to particular wavelength offsets from Bragg condition. High-efficiency VBGs can be recorded in UV-sensitive photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass. Narrow-band reflecting VBGs allow multi-channel SBC with high spectral density of channels.;In this dissertation, experimental results of SBC with high spectral density of combined channels in two spectral regions of interest (1064 and 1550 nm) are reported. The behavior of narrow-band VBGs under high-power laser radiation is investigated. A laser system with kW-level output power and near-diffraction-limited divergence of spectrally-combined output beam is demonstrated. The system combines five randomly-polarized Yb-doped fiber lasers with 0.5 nm spectral separation in central wavelengths using narrow-band reflecting VBGs with absolute efficiency of combining >90%.

Shantideva (Shyiwa Lha, Wylie: zhi ba lha); Mn: Шантидэва гэгээн) was an 8th-century Indian Buddhist scholar at Nalanda University and an adherent of the Madhyamaka philosophy of Nagarjuna. The Chan Ssu Lun of the Chinese Madhyamika school identifies two different individuals given the name "Shantideva": the founder of the Avaivartika Sangha in the 6th century, and a later Shantideva who studied at Nalanda in the 8th century who appears to be the source of the Tibetan biographies. Archaeological discoveries support this thesis. Two Tibetan sources of the life of Shantideva are the historians Butön and Jetsun Tāranātha. Recent scholarship has brought to light a short Sanskrit life of Shantideva in a 14th century Nepalise manuscript. An accessible account that follows the Butön closely can be found in Kunzang Pelden, The Nectar of Manjushri's speech.

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most extraordinary artefacts to survive from the eleventh century.
